KUALA LUMPUR: Following the growing interest in food truck dining, City Hall is planning to create KL’s very own Food Truck Alley, akin to those abroad.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the project would be carried out near Jalan Sultan Ismail and would complement the ongoing River of Life project.

“Once the River of Life (RoL) project is completed, we will able to set up a special area for food trucks behind Jalan Sultan Ismail (near the Klang River).

“The Food Truck Alley will have a proper waste disposal system with water and electricity provided for the operators. The concept is quite common in Europe and the United States,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Food Truck Fest Programme at Dataran Merdeka today.

RoL is carried out in three phases, namely, cleaning, beautification and development along the 10.7km stretch of the Klang and Gombak rivers and turn them into a waterfront that is abuzz with leisure and business activities.

One of the operators, coffee and pastry seller Siti Rafeah Suradi, 41, said the food truck business has an advantage in terms of mobility compared to conventional food selling methods.

“We have our own community and get updates on activities and potential food fests such as this through a WhatsApp group. We recently went to Johor Baru to sell our coffee and the response from the public was good.

“More youngsters should start early and venture into this business.

Apart from business licence from the respective municipal council, we are also required to get permission from building owners where we wish to park our truck and carry out business.

“The management will then inform City Hall to allow us to sell our food in front of their building,” said the owner of KPkopies.
