In response to the Southern California Mobile Food Vendor’s Association’s recent endorsement of Stephen Box for LA City Council, District 4, several members, including Papa’s Tapas Truck and Gourmet Genie are staging an event, “A BOX Lunch,” this Sunday, February 20, 2011 in order to “Get-out-the-vote” on the usually under-attended municipal elections, and to show national solidarity for a candidate that has the potential to improve the City’s relationship with Gourmet Food Trucks.
In June 2010, the incumbent, Tom LaBonge, sponsored a motion to reduce the presence of Food Trucks to non-commercial areas, making it virtually impossible for these small businesses to operate in the City of Los Angeles. Box says, “LA is the Capital of Diversity and the Food Truck Industry is an expression of all that is great about Los Angeles. LA’s Food Truck phenomenon is part of unique street culture and it is an expression of mobility that brings our streets to life. It is an economic boon that City Hall should embrace and support looking for win-win opportunities that connect us, not divide us.”
With this election, the Trucks intend on sending a message to City Hall and to leadership across the country, demonstrating that they intend on fighting for representatives that support their viability as small businesses in the community.
