Los Angeles: Will TruckIt! Improve on The Average Food Truck Festival?

By: Hadley Tomicki | GrubStreet LA

There have been a whole lot of food truck festivals over the past year or so, but Phillip Dane, organizer of L.A. Flea Market, is gunning for a big-tent show at Union Station in March called, wait for it, “TruckIt Fest.” Dane is bringing 40 trucks together on March 6th, along with live bands, DJS, and also (taking our favorite page from the Street Food Fest) 200 local designers and artists in a craft market. That’s clearly not the only thing Dane has learned from studying past events.

In order to circumvent the pains and complaints of the crowd, TruckIt is offering a $40 VIP ticket that grants access an hour early to these attendees, which includes a ten-dollar food voucher, free valet parking, and a lounge with menu service from the trucks to lord over the suffering crowds. Sounds like an advantage, but paying forty dollars and still having to pay for anything else could be disheartening. Everyone else will be paying five-dollars to enter and since parking is going to be one huge bee-atch at this thing, you get a dollar off your admission if you take The Metro and show your train ticket.

In addition to 40 food trucks, bands like Far West and The Broken Numbers Band will play. There will be a rock wall for climbing and the whole event will wind both inside and out of Union Station for six hours.

Anyway, we love art and we really love food, but besides the obvious questions if this thing is coming past the point of saturation for food truck anything at this point, we have to wonder if the first run will be an ill-organized bummer or if TruckIt has learned the lessons of the past. We’d frankly rather chase down each truck at a time than pay admission just to wait in another long line, but five dollars to cavort around Union Station with 200 artists and a few local bands just might be a worthy investment. What do you think? Let us know in our comments.

While you ponder, here are some of the trucks planned for TruckIt!:
