You surely can’t go wrong selling pies from a food truck – Elijah Cooper and Rob Taylor sure hope so.

The Porirua pair have had their Elemental Eats food truck out and about in January.

It made its debut at the Lions market in Waitangirua recently, travelled to the riverbank market in Lower Hutt last weekend, and will have a spot at Te Rauparaha Park for Festival of the Elements on February 6.

Cooper runs the creative side of the business. He makes pastry-free kumara pies with all natural fillings, including pork and watercress, Mexican chicken, and bacon and egg.

“We’ve spent about six months working away at this, getting the food right, the business set up, and now the truck fitted out and sign-written,” Cooper said.

“We’re a family business and we wanted to be mobile, rather than in a fixed location. That way we can take our food out to different places and events, rather than waiting for people to come to us.”

Their Ford Transit has been set up with a kitchen, although the pies are pre-made. Signwriting is nearly complete on the truck.

Healthy food was in vogue, Cooper said, and using locally sourced ingredients – and eco-friendly cartons – was all part of their philosophy, he said.

The food is easy to eat, tasty and ticks boxes for New Zealanders who love healthy food and a good pie. The pies will range from about $6 to $8 each.

There is already a solid following on the Elemental Eats Facebook page and while there are plans to spread their wings eventually, keeping the food truck based in the Wellington region for now is planned.

Cooper said he hoped to find a permanent site for a Porirua base during the week.

“We’re keen to build up a bit of a following before we even think about growing the business.”

Fresh salads and coffee will also be on sale from the Elemental Eats food truck.
