LEXINGTON, Ky. – Food truck vendors say new restrictions to the city’s proposed Food Truck Pilot Program being considered by the Lexington Parking Authority tomorrow would take some of the most profitable areas zoned for food trucks off the table.
The new restrictions, if passed, would remove food truck zones from Vine Street and Limestone Street, instead offering areas on N. MLK Blvd and Corral Street. Also the parking time for trucks would be limited to two hours per truck and one zone per day between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM. Sean Tibbets is with the Bluegrass Food Truck Association.
“We do want the pilot program. We do want to be on public streets, but we want to do it in a way that is safe, legal, and most importantly for us profitable, and by continuing to add more and more restrictions and regulations, government is choking an industry that is trying to grow,” Tibbetts says.
Some restaurant owners have criticized the decision to allow food trucks to utilize public metered parking spaces, which they say will discourage more customers from trying to park and eat downtown.
The new restrictions will be discussed at a meeting of Lexington Parking Authority Thursday morning.
