The Re-Up BBQ is part of Vancouver’s wonderful street food revolution and serves traditional Southern BBQ from a mobile trailer transformed into a kitchen on wheels. Located at 700 Hornby Street outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, fresh BBQ can be found from 11:30am to 3pm or until sold out from Monday to Saturday. On Saturday nights, they can be found outside of the Biltmore Cabaret at 395 Kingsway feeding hungry rock and roll fans from 9pm until sold out.
Most local street food vendors use the social networking site Twitter to broadcast their location to potential customers and this is exactly how I found Re-Up BBQ at the Biltmore on a crisp Saturday night. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and some “omnivore” chili. The chili starts out as a vegan dish, and is loaded with beans and corn, making it full of flavor. Savory layers of pulled pork are then added to make the meal truly memorable. The chili is seasoned to perfection and has a nice thick consistency and loads of pork. The pulled pork sandwich is served on a fresh bakery bun with crisp cabbage-based coleslaw and plenty of pulled pork in a rich BBQ sauce. The coleslaw is the difference maker in this sandwich, adding a crisp and very fresh crunch to an otherwise soft textured sandwich. The pork is cooked to perfection and the sauce is very rich and smoky. Re-Up also offers house smoked bacon from sustainably farmed free range pork and during the holidays they offer house smoked turkeys. Ditch the food court and head outside for some street food, you can thank me later.
