Last year’s United Way Food Truck Rally was a hit that demanded another round this year.
The first rally of the summer will kick-off Friday and will happen on the first Friday of every month until at least September. If the weather is nice, there will be a final event in October.
The trucks involved for the summer events are Tasty Bones Barbecue, The Daily Press, Wyoming Kettle Corn, Bella Fuoco Wood Fired Pizza, Happy Taco Hut, Nipa Hut and On the Hook Fish and Chips. Most of the trucks are from Cheyenne, but On the Hook is based out of Laramie. It will be free to attend the event, but prices will vary depending on the truck with part of the proceeds going to United Way.
On the Hook hasn’t officially opened, but co-owner Ocean Andrew is excited to bring his Alaskan cod to Cheyenne, Laramie and Fort Collins this summer. Andrew plans to offer not only fish and chips, but cod tacos, shrimp cocktails, shrimp and chips and even chowder.
He said the fish comes from his family’s commercial fishing company in Alaska.
“They catch cod with a 30-mile long hook and line and every six feet is automatically baited with a hook,” he said. “They bring it back onboard and the fish are immediately beheaded, gutted and flash frozen. That preserves the quality of the fish since the processing is immediate. Our fish is much more tender and moist that you’d find in most restaurants.”
Andrew said he plans to bring the truck along to the Wyoming Brewers Festival and Cheyenne Frontier Days this summer, as well as the other food truck rallies.
“Food trucks aren’t seen as ‘roach coaches’ anymore,” he said. “The food truck culture has really exploded. They have full blown commercial kitchens now. You can offer high quality food with a food truck.”
