Houston Food Trucks: An *Internet Hug*

This week we attended the NRA Show 2011 in Chicago. In addition to a flash mob, Top Chef showdown and tons of delicious food samples, we couldn’t help thinking of Houston when we came upon the food trucks on displays at NRA.

Ron Ruggless’ recent Nations Restaurant News article “Food truck trend still cruising,” highlights the boom in the food truck industry as a result of customers seeking economical solutions to eating out. Food trucks are ranked as the top trend in the NRA 2011 Restaurant Industry Forecast, and with Houston ranking among the top U.S. cities for food (#1 for burgers this year), it’s no surprise our food truck scene is blossoming.

Just a couple of weekends ago, there was the Haute Wheels Houston Food Truck Festival.

Last month, the Houston Press presented the annual Menu of Menus Extravaganza where food critic Katharine Schilcutt hand-picked some of Houston’s best meals on wheels. (One of our favorites: Rolling Hunger. Those little tortilla things are quite nom!)

Around the same time, Culture Map put out its top 10 list of Houston food trucks. To that end, we thought it only right to give a little * internet hug * to three of our favorite food trucks in Houston:

1. Zilla Street Eats – We fell for them when they let us mix and match their menu to get hot wings and macaroni. @zillastreeteats

2. Mmm CupcakesWho can resist dessert that comes to you? Red Velvet Cookies n’ Cream Cupcake with an Oreo Cookie Bottom.  That’s all she wrote!

3. Oh My Pocket Pies – A hat tip to this sustainability focused food truck that specializes in great food served in flaky pockets of dough. All of their wares are recyclable, compostable or biodegradable products.

Of course the next time you’re headed out to enjoy tasty bites on-the-go, put some B4 packets in your pocket. We travel well!
