(Left) Sriracha Beef and (Right) Baja Fish…
see what I mean by messy?!

I am absolutely loving that my office building managers have been inviting food trucks to come to our location on occasional Mondays. Score! I am, well, a whore for tacos, so when I hear a taco truck is coming through, I’ll have my money waiting like a five year old scanning the horizon for the distant bells of an icecream truck with the $1.50 her mom begrudgingly gave her in all quarters.

Blue Pacific Grill & Taco Food Truck rolled up recently, and I got a chance to taste their concoctions. We had one hit and one miss, I’ll admit, so they won’t be put on my Naughty List. I was greeted warmly and my food came out relatively quickly. One of my tacos was made to order (fried fish) so mine took a bit longer to get to me than others who ordered after me given the freshness. Not an issue in my book. The tacos were 2 for $10 and you could mix and match among all of their offerings. I didn’t see any “side dishes” or desserts offered, so I’m not sure if they have any or just stick to the business. Could be a good idea to look into in the future. However, I will say that the portions were large and kept me filled up. I couldn’t finish even if I tried to. If you head to their Facebook page, they have a pretty extensive menu posted, although all items aren’t offered on any given day. Their best seller was sold out by the time I got to the truck if that tells you anything (also people seem to rave about their Bang Bang Shrimp taco), so come prepared to get there early or have a back-up plan in mind. The tacos come in your typical take-out red and white striped cardboard boat. Unfortunately, the toppings and sauces are spread across the tacos to the point where they get all over the boat and all over you. Definitely a messy situation to contend with.

The first taco I ordered was the Baja Fish Tacos. I can tell a lot about a taco purveyor by their fish taco, and had high hopes for a taco truck with the name of an ocean in its title. The fish is cod and its fried to order, topped with slaw, salsa, cilantro, onion and a sauce. While I asked for no cilantro (damn that soap-tasting gene!), mine still had cilantro on it, although there was no line and only two guys working the truck. Not a huge issue – I’m used to picking it off the tops of things, but attention to detail lacked just a bit in my book. Unfortunately, I found mine to be a bit on the bland side, flavor wise, and altogether WAAAAAAYY to wet to be able to eat, much less avoid any messes. I think if they stuck to seasoning the fish better and laid off some of the liquid/sauce, it’d be a great taco. It definitely tasted fresh, so there’s a positive, but a little bit of tweaking would have made this taco satisfying.

The second taco I ordered was the Sriracha Beef. I love my red meat and I love my spice. This taco comes with slow cooked pot roast, Asian flavorings, slaw, scallions, crushed peanuts, and Sriracha according to their menu. Mine also seemed to come with some crunchy bits that I couldn’t explain, but didn’t offend me either. The beef, which was not skimped on, was so tender and succulent, it fell apart in my mouth. The flavorings were both slightly sweet and savory, which made me come back for more. You would think that the sriracha might be too much, especially since they drizzle it on top of the taco directly, but it was just the right amount of heat. The crunchies helped add mouth feel. My taco seemed to come with just romaine lettuce instead of coleslaw, but it was fine by me! If I could have two of these instead of the fish, I’d be over the moon. I’d definitely go back to the truck, but just stick with some red meat this time.

Apparently you can also order ahead through their Facebook site and pick up at their truck. Pretty nifty if you know you’ll be in their area and don’t want to wait in line (not that the wait time is that long anyway). This truck has also won several awards in the past few years, so you know its a fan favorite (and we know what’s best, damn it!). I’d advise you to go and check it out, but veer away from the fried fish tacos (they have some great other fish offerings that appear to have better-sounding flavors). Definitely grab one of the Sriracha Beef tacos (or snag a bite of your friend’s!).
