TUPELO – For the past seven months, Food Truck Friday was a one-truck show.
That changed Friday, when two of the city’s three licensed food trucks lined up on Main Street in Fairpark.
Local Mobile was joined for the first time by Memphis Style BBQ on Wheels.
A hungry lunch crowd grew steadily through mid-day.
“I think it’s great – it gives people more opportunities to try eating at food trucks,” said Local Mobile owner Curt McLellan, who was busy cooking as marketing chief Ashley Prince filled orders of chicken and dumplings, burger sliders, shrimp po-boys and other favorites.
At Memphis Style BBQ, co-owners Mitchell and Kakisha Redick also worked as a team, filling orders for chopped pork sandwiches, chopped chicken sandwiches, barbecue nachos and, of course, ribs.
Unable to join the two food trucks on Friday was Two Dudes Mexican Foods, which made its debut at the Tupelo Craft Beer Festival. The owners were making modifications to their truck and should be joining Food Truck Friday soon.
For McLellan, who can be considered the pioneer of the movement in Tupelo, the more the merrier.
“We’ve got totally different menus, different price points. … it’s like having a food court at the mall, except we’re here, outside.”
The Redicks, who actually started their food truck in Memphis two years ago, opened for the first time on Monday. They moved from Memphis in January and later decided to open their food truck. They were members of the Memphis Food Truck Alliance.
“We think people will catch on to food trucks here like they did in Memphis,” Mitchell Redick said. “They really liked to have that fresh taste and having different choices.”
Among the customers Friday were Pam and Billy Cook, who decided to give the food truck experience their first try.
“We wanted to try something new,” Pam Cook said. “We’d heard a lot about it from others who’d tried it and liked it.”
All three food trucks have Facebook pages, where they post their locations during the week.
