Berkeley, CA: Saul’s Deli Dreams Up a Latke Truck for Hanukkah

Mobile Jewish chefs Wise Sons Deli were the first to rent out the Off The Grid-branded food mobile, and now Berkeley brick and mortar Saul’s Deli plans to park it in front of the restaurant and christen it the Latke Truck from December 23 to the 26th, right smack dab in the middle of Hanukkah. The menu for this “Neverending Latke Party” explores some of the hallmarks of Jewish food: latkes (potato pancakes), kogel mogel (egg nog), sufganiyot (doughnuts), and hot apple cider.

A live klezmer band—made up of members from cheekily-named groups likeRed Hot Chachkas, Inspector Gadje, and Kugelplex—will make things even more festive on December 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meanwhile, Saul’s Deli will be adding a special Hanukkah menu featuring Moroccan and Yemeni specialties from December 21 to 28.

The Bay Area is trying to step up its Jewish food game for sure—with Miller’s East Coast Deli opening up a second North Bay location, Old World Food Truck pop-ups becoming ever more frequent, and Wise Sons working on a permanent location, but this should be one of the livelier Hanukkah food offerings around.
