With the huge amount of food trucks across New York City, it’s difficult to find ones that aren’t serving the same food as the ones a few blocks away. Once in a while, you want something different than the standard fare, regardless of how good those traditional foods taste. Before you head out for your next meal on wheels, consider some of these unique food truck items available across NYC.
Edible Wrappers and Decadent Ice Cream
Coolhaus has wrapped their ice cream sandwiches in an all-natural, calorie-free edible wrapper. You can get some pretty interesting ice cream options, as well, such as brown butter and candied bacon, olive oil rosemary, balsamic fig and mascarpone, chocolate chipotle BBQ with Jack Daniel’s, fried chicken and waffles, and gin and tonic. Put the ice cream on different types of cookies, including peanut butter, oatmeal, vegan chocolate truffle, and chocolate chip. They are currently off the road for the season, but check out their calendar for updates on where they’ll be next.
Yes, Douche Burger is actually the name of the $666 burger available at 666 Burger Truck. So how exactly did it come to deserve the name? Kobe beef is topped with truffles, lobster, and caviar. It’s then covered with Gruyere cheese that’s melted in champagne steam. Barbecue sauce is the final touch, but it’s not your typical BBQ sauce. It’s made with Kopi Luwak coffee beans that have been digested by the Asian palm civet. Did we mention that the Kobe patty is stuffed with foie gras? The entire concoction is wrapped in gold leaf.
We would be remiss if the BBQ pulled pork wafel and the chili con corne wafel wasn’t on this list of unique items found on NYC food trucks. Available on the Wafels & Dinges truck, the BBQ pulled pork wafel consists of a wafel that’s topped with pulled pork, sweet barbecue sauce, coleslaw, and a coolickle. The chili con corne wafel, which is available seasonally, consists of a corn wafel that’s topped off with sour cream, chili, and cilantro.
Curried Goat and Oxtail
Available at Yvonne’s Jamaican Food Truck, the curried goat can be prepared as spicy as you wish. Oxtail is also available and is a favorite among customers. Each option comes in small, medium, or large and costs $6, $8, and $9 respectively. If you want good Jamaican food, especially in the East Village, it’s said that this is the place to go. This cash-only food truck is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 3:45 p.m., but it often sells out early.
Known as takoyaki, you can get eight octopus balls for $6.50 at the Okadaman food truck. They consist of octopus that’s fried in a batter of egg, scallion, red ginger, rondri, bonito flakes, tempura bits, and Japanese mayonnaise. Okadaman is currently on hiatus, but according to their Twitter page, they’ll reopen in spring.
