The Athens-Clarke County government hasn’t yet eased regulations allowing for food trucks, but the success of last year’s food truck festival downtown showed the community’s interest in these mobile cuisine purveyors.
Now, an Oconee County nursery has jumped on the food truck bandwagon by organizing Oconee County’s first food truck festival.
The first annual Food Truck Rodeo is scheduled 3-7 p.m. May 4 at Specialty Ornamentals, whose owner, Flo Chaffin, has been planning the rodeo since early January.
Food trucks booked to attend include Athens’ Farm Cart, The Streets Cafe, King of Pops, Jittery Joe’s and Gigi’s Cupcakes. Out of town carts include Skillet and Spurs, which whips up Old West style cooking, and Nana G’s Chicken and Waffles, an Atlanta-based truck specializing in that syrupy chicken tradition.
Some area organizations that plan to have a presence at the rodeo include Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast, Oconee County Tourism, Healing and Hop Through Science, Oconee County Cultural Arts Foundation and Terra Bella Landscape.
Chafin said she is still thinking of adding a few more businesses or nonprofits to this list.
As the date approaches, a few more carts, a few more businesses and more musical acts other than Jerry Zee might be added.
Specialty Ornamentals is located at 3650 Colham Ferry Rd.
