Food trucks are beginning to match Toronto restaurants in terms of diversity, and now there’s another set to join the fray in February 2013. Kung Fu Taco is, much as it sounds, Asian fusion food designed to work well on the street. They’ve been at TUM, will be partying it up for Fidel Gastro’s 1-year anniversary on Thursday, and are finalizing their catering menu later this week.
The venture is owned by Alexander Rodrigues, who has 6 years of experience in the food industry (most recently with Saputo Cheeses) and more personal experience with Asian cuisine through cooking for his wife (who is Vietnamese). Kung Fu Taco will offer short-rib and yellowfin grouper tacos, banh mi sliders, rice noodle burritos, and a unique take on poutine–spicy pork and kimchi on fries.
There’s also some talk of lettuce wraps filled with Korean BBQ, and everything (including the kimchi) will be made in-house. You can expect 10 menu items, with 3-4 being served at any one time.
The cost is still to be ironed out, but expect items to hover in the $5-$8 range, and the truck will service downtown Toronto and Hamilton. When asked if he’s nervous about launching in such a bustling (and increasingly crowded scene), Rodrigues says no. “We fit in well,” he says of the concept, “and there’s not really anyone doing what we’re doing.” They’re slated to launch in the grim, frigid depths of winter (a tall order for any outdoor-based business), but I say bring on the tacos–mitten-style.
