I have a confession to make. I have never been to a food truck rodeo! Although rave reviews and mouth-watering photos of Rochester’s trendy and unique food trucks regularly appear on my social media feeds, I’ve never fed on any of their delights!
Part of the reason is because food truck rodeos (a term for a gathering of food trucks all in one place) are typically held only in the city of Rochester or close outskirts.
Thankfully, that will change, albeit just briefly, later this month when a food truck rodeo rolls into the west side.
The rodeo will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, at Spencerport High School and was the brainchild of Keith Rich, president of the Spencerport Sports Booster Club.
“There really aren’t any events like this on the west side,” said Rich, of Spencerport, who began organizing the rodeo in March. “I went to our superintendent to pitch the idea of a fundraiser and community event with the food trucks and got a lot of support.”
This is a new event for the club, which supports all of the athletic teams in the district through concessions and fundraising. Previously it held a large toy sale fundraiser at the high school each winter for a decade.
“We are trying to reach out to all of the communities surrounding Spencerport,” Rich said. “We want everyone to come out to enjoy the food and camaraderie.”
Twelve trucks have committed to the event, including The Bento Box (Asian and American street food); Cheesed and Confused (gourmet grilled cheeses); Le Petit Poutine (poutine, a Canadian dish featuring French fries and cheese curds covered in gravy); Papa Gigs (Italian food); Effortlessly Healthy (Paleo food); Roc City Sammich (Pittsburgh-style sandwiches); Wraps on Wheels (wraps) and Kona Ice (shaved ice).
Rich says that in addition to the food trucks, there also will be a silent auction, a dunk tank, a bounce house, face painting, entertainment and plenty of parking.
I can’t wait to finally attend my first food truck rodeo and hope to see you there!
Ice cream follow-up
Thanks to everyone who took the time to tell me they enjoyed my column last month on ice cream eateries on the west side!
At the close of that column, I asked you to share your favorite ice cream places that I missed and only received one email with a “miss.”
Readers Kathy and John Kutolowski wrote to share their love for Seaward Candies, 7 Main St. in Brockport.
“Seaward’s makes their own candy at their Holley, NY home base, so there are many temptations other than ice cream. But nothing can beat an ice cream cone — very generous portions — and a walk along the canal just a stone’s throw away.”
Sounds like a visit to Seaward Candies is in order for me! Perhaps for dessert after the food truck rodeo?
Until next Friday, may your own west-side stories be great ones …
