We love you, Spam.

I’m kind of a slut for Spam, and thankfully so is Hot Joy‘s (1014 S. Alamo) executive chef and co-owner Quealy Watson. The chef will join the Spamerican food truck from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 9 outside Six Flags Fiesta Texas (17000 IH-10 W.) to demo his Spam Katsu sandwich. The truck will be at the location from 3 to 10 p.m. handing out samples and swag.

Watson, who recently returned from a whirlwind trip around Asia, is an avid fan of the pork shoulder and ham product and showcases the ingredient in his Spam fried rice at the eatery. Watson will demo the sandwich which he describes as a “simple sandwich made with a slice of Spam that’s breaded in panko and fried … put in between two pieces of white bread slathered with katsu sauce (a thicker Worchestire-style sauce), kewpie mayo, hot mustard and a slice of American cheese.”

The truck, currently on a 12-city tour, will stick around San Antonio for the following two days with another stop Sunday, May 10 at HEB #16 (721 Castroville Road) from noon to 4 p.m. and Monday, May 11 at HEB #9 (735 SW Military Drive) from noon to 4 p.m.

“I’m actually a bit of an amateur Spam historian, Spam played an important part in the history of America and also an interesting niche role in a lot of Asian food culture. It’s more than just delicious ham in a can, and I’m happy to help them feed more people Spam! Also, SPAM FOOD TRUCK,” Watson said via email.
