In all the developments we’ve seen on the food truck front—and oh, how many there are—perhaps none have inspired more unbridled joy than this: A fleet of Ezell’s food trucks are in the works.
Yes, fleet. Phylicia Davidson, daughter of Ezell’s Famous Chicken cofounder Lewis Rudd, and business partner Jennifer Stephens, Rudd’s niece, are planning to roll out multiple trucks as part of Ezell’s Express. A menu is still in the works but will obviously revolve around the fried chicken that has earned Ezell’s a diehard fan base. The launch is projected to happen this spring, likely in April.
This most awesome news factors into a larger, aggressive franchising campaign. Rudd, the president and CEO, has partnered with Dennis Waldron to grow Ezell’s on an international scale. Several more restaurants will open regionally within the year, as will one in Dubai. Others in the Middle East and here on the West Coast will come after. (Waldron, for the record, is the mastermind behind Cinnabon’s 400-stores-strong success.)
Davidson works for Microsoft but purchased franchising rights as a way to carry on the family business while taking it in a new direction. Like her father and Waldron, Davidson (who has managed and worked in stores since she was a child) and Stephens (ditto) are anxious to spread the fried chicken gospel. They plan to launch with one truck with more to quickly follow. Ezell’s Express will operate throughout the Puget Sound.
