Festival organizers have invited the Red Hook Lobster Truck, Curbside Cupcakes, Fojol Brothers, District Taco, Tasty Kabob, Eat Wonky, DC Slices, CapMac and Sidewalk Sweetsations.
The competitors are the Red Hook Lobster Pound and Solar Crepes, both of which fought hard to make it to the finals.
This spring, a new wave of mobile eateries are rolling out, offering everything from kebabs and burgers to cupcakes and Chinese steamed buns.
Lobster is upscale. Hot dog buns are not. Crack the former, toast and butter the latter, maybe mix in a bit of celery and mayonnaise, and you have the ultimate in shabby-chic cuisine: the lobster roll.
Alexander said “But they’re making a sizable amount of income. … We want things to be fair” between the trucks and existing, brick-and-mortar restaurants.
With temperatures dipping below freezing, the hungry masses who assembled on Franklin Square on Monday enjoyed a rare opportunity to sample the menus of 12 different food trucks -- assuming, that is, their numb tongues allowed them to taste anything at all.
Curbside Cupcakes co-owner Kristi Whitfield and several of her fellow food truckers were mingling after one of their regular Monday meetings (you know, those gatherings where the mobile foodies fret and commiserate and devise strategies to counter those who would put them out of business).
