CINCINNATI — This could be the best summer for people with a killer sweet tooth.

Busken Bakery will start selling “Halo Donuts” at noon Saturday from its first-ever food truck.

“This is a hot glazed doughnut and then it’s stuffed with the best ice cream the city has to offer,” said Kathy Birkofer, director of business to business operations at Busken.

Each Halo doughnut will be made fresh from inside the pink-and-blue truck parked outside of Busken’s headquarters at 2675 Madison Road in Hyde Park. The family-owned bakery will offer eight “original” and three “signature” Halo doughnuts filled with either Graeter’s or United Dairy Farmers ice cream flavors.

Signature offerings include the “Pigg-Licious” Halo, a maple syrup and cinnamon sugar coated Busken glazed doughnut stuffed with Graeter’s Maple Cinnamon Crunch ice cream that will be topped with candied bacon. The fancier Halos cost $6. The simpler original halos cost $4.

Both types of Halos will come with either black raspberry chip, Blue Moo cookie dough, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, cookies & cream or coffee ice cream sandwiched between a fresh Busken doughnut.

Busken Bakery president and CEO Dan Busken said he was inspired to launch the food truck after seeing a similar concept in California a few years ago.

“So, we never really added ice cream to our products, however the summer months are not good bakery business months, so we are hoping that by bringing the ice cream into the doughnut that we’ll attract a lot of people during the summer,” Busken said.

Birkofer said the Halo food truck will remain parked outside of Busken headquarters for the foreseeable future. The bakery has even added outdoor seating near where the truck is currently parked.

The Busken Halo Donuts food truck will be open noon-9 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday-Thursday; noon-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and closed on Monday.
