Trucks roll in today for Newark’s first NewPark Street Eats event.
Calling all foodies who love their meals on wheels! Gourmet food trucks—lots of them—are rolling into town today.
Nine food trucks will dish up treats that include fancy burgers, BBQ and unusual salads at “NewPark Streets Eats,” serving dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at NewPark Mall. The trucks will cluster in the parking lot between Macy’s and Sears.
Food-on-wheels vendors today include 51st State, BBQ Kabali, MoGo BBQ, Kara’s Cupcakes, Treatbot, Mo-Bowl and Grill Stars Curbside Cuisine.
It’s the first in a series of Curbside Cuisine events, the result of a partnership between the City of Newark, the Newark Chamber of Commerce, and Patrick Clarke and Phil Woodman of Fremont-based Grill Stars, who pitched the idea to local officials.
Deemed the NewPark Street Eats, the event will repeat every other Friday, said Chamber President Linda Ashley.
“People can expect to see tricked-out food trucks and gourmet food,” Ashley said.
Each NewPark Street Eats gathering will showcase different food, she added.
“Hopefully we’ll be bringing people from other communities to Newark,” Ashley said. City and chamber officials think Street Eats will benefit other business in town too.
Neighboring Union City will host similar events this summer, starting June 23, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Union Landing shopping center.
Food truck gatherings have been popping up recently across the Bay Area, from “SJ Eats” in San Jose to “Off the Grid” in San Francisco, and the Tri-Cities events will be organized similarly.
