Vancouver now has 97 food carts offering unique food on its city streets, with the expanded program celebrating its one-year anniversary Sunday.
“It was 80 per cent following the criteria laid out and 20 per cent opinion,” Barnaby says.
The hit Food Network series Eat St. comes to Canada tonight and features Vancouver's newest food truck Feastro the Rolling Bistro.
"If you like good food, you've come to the right place," said Mayor Gregor Robertson. "This is affordable street food and it reflects Vancouver's cultural diversity -and it creates some truly new opportunities for local entrepreneurs."
The food cart program has become an incestuous relationship between organic food suppliers, high end culinary collectives and faux overpriced “farmers’ markets.”
Vancouver will announce the newest 19 vendors to its street food program on April 4. They were chosen last week from a list of 52 by a panel of chefs, business people, community activists and food bloggers.
Vancouver is going to apply "minimum nutritional standards" to the food carts it licenses as part of an expansion of its street food vendor program.
