In our opinion, one of the better new street food vendors this year is The Steel Cart. They serve excellent sandwiches (and soup in the cooler weather) for lunch.
What you may not know is The Steel Cart also serves breakfast. If it’s not too busy, you can ask them for a breakfast item at lunchtime.
They recently started serving grits, with your choice of a number of great toppings. We got grits with fried egg, bacon and gouda cheese for $6. You can also get gorgonzola, kale, chipotle peppers and a few other items as toppings.
Come to think of it, this could make a good vegetarian meal, if you leave out the bacon.
Being a native New Yorker, we are as far from Southern as you can get. But when we were in our teens, we used to visit family in Atlanta every summer, and fell in love with grits. Not a big surprise, as we’ve always preferred farina to oatmeal in the hot breakfast cereal world.
Getting back to lunch, this was a full pint-sized container of grits. That’s a lot of grits to eat in this hot weather. Luckily, our office is air conditioned.
On top of the grits was a fried egg and crispy bacon lardons.
For breakfast we prefer our grits with brown sugar and a touch or cream, but for lunch, savory is the way to go.
The bacon on top brought meatiness and saltiness to the meal, not top mention crispiness.
Under the egg and bacon was gouda cheese. We love gouda cheese, with it being creamy and slightly sharp at the same time, though it’s not nearly as sharp as gorgonzola, which they also have available.
The fried egg also had a little crispiness around the edges, but our favorite part of the egg is the yolk. Breaking up the soft yellow yolk helped us spread yolky love all over the bacon and gouda cheese. (That did sound kind of dirty, didn’t it?)
This was more than enough to eat for lunch, especially in this ho weather. This lunch will probably keep us full until tomorrow at least.
And there was even enough egg and bacon to last all the way to the bottom of the bowl.
