Erik Wegner, who owns Dog Gone Ron’s hot dog cart, said he plans to talk to officials later this month about how the regulations will apply to his business—if his trailer is considered a food truck and if he could be exempt from the regulations.

The draft ordinance identifies specific locations downtown where mobile food vendors can operate and the city is looking to charge vendors a monthly fee of $35 per parking space used.

The Chubby Chickpea calls their cuisine, “Sephardic Street Fare,” but the term is more poetic than precise. This is classic Israeli road food: hummus, falafel, babaganoush, and grilled meats wrapped in laffa. My dining companions agree that the chicken is juicy and well-prepared. Our side of falafel is tasty, and the hummus substantial. It’s less a spread than a dish of its own.

The festival runs from noon to 3 p.m., rain or shine, at Farm Pond Park on Dudley Road.

The first order of business, completed by the council last week, was to clarify what permits are needed and where food cart operators set up. Wherever they find customers, it is critical vendors be held to the same sanitary and food storage standards as all restaurants.

The city took steps last week to uphold its longtime practice of prohibiting mobile food trucks from operating downtown. Still, several councilors indicated they’d like to consider rules that allow restaurant-on-wheels businesses to co-exist with brick-and-mortar establishments.

It will feature more than 20 gourmet food trucks serving up their full-sized portions and sample sizes of their most popular dishes.
